Replace Aluminum Siding with Vinyl

If heat and cooling bills are beginning to stack up, one possible suspect could be the siding on the walls of your house. Even if you haven't yet had a problem, you should consider replacing your aluminum siding with vinyl siding.

Throughout the U.S., heightened awareness about energy-efficiency has caused many homeowners to purchase products that will help cut their home's energy costs. One of the best products out there for increasing energy-efficiency is vinyl. This is because vinyl is does not conduct cold and heat through it the way that aluminum does.

Vinyl Improves Energy Efficiency in Homes.

Have you ever felt the difference? Imagine touching an aluminum storm door on the side of a house that faces the sun in the middle of a hot summer day. You'd burn your hand if you tried to touch it. However, a vinyl door in the same situation will be cool, because vinyl doesn't retain the heat from the sun the way the metal or aluminum does. A similar thing happens in a very cold environment; an aluminum surface will be extremely cold while Vinyl stays relatively close to the same temperature year-round.

By replacing aluminum siding with vinyl, your heater and cooler can work less to keep the interior of your house at the temperature you want it to stay at. Even if you have insulation between the siding and walls of your house, you'll still see an increase of energy efficiency with the replacement.

Vinyl Works with Insulation.

The increase of the overall energy-efficiency of homes may vary, due to things like how well the walls and doors are insulated and sealed. Insulation is not 100% deflective of heat or cold, it just helps. In fact, the "R-value" of insulation refers to its "Resistance" to heat flow. So, if you could reduce the conduction of heat into the insulation, from either the inside or the outside of your house, you would cut down on the amount of heat flow that insulation has to resist. Therefore, it would cut down on the amount of "heat gain" (heat coming into your house from the sun), and "heat loss" (heat being lost out of your house when you run your heater) of your house that was occurring vinyl siding was being used..

Vinyl siding is not the cure-all for the challenges that your home may have with energy efficiency, but if you want to increase the energy-efficiency of your house, it would be wise to replace aluminum siding with insulated vinyl.
